Who Done It?

Question

This elk wallow is at about 4000 feet in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest near Mt. Adams. In late summer the pond dries up, but not before attracting a variety of birds and small mammals as well as elk.

These tracks are about 6-7 inches long so this bird is quite large. If you look closely you will note that toes 2 and 4 are offset from each other. These two clues are quite diagnostic for the Great Blue Heron.
