If you realized that this was not a mammal you were on the right track. Various beatles and other insects make tracks that consist of parallel rows of small marks similar to this. The pattern makes sense if you look closely at how their legs are attached.
In this case, if you had followed this trail you would have encountered the animal itself -- a grasshopper.
