Note: Like dragonflies, robber flies are predatory insects but they suck the fluids from their prey rather than eat them. They capture a variety of other insects, though some groups tend to specialize on certain insects such as bees. In turn, they can fall prey to larger predators, even larger specimens of the same species. These are very interesting insects yet tend to go unnoticed by most people.
I have yet to find a satisfactory guide or website that covers northwest species so have had to use online sources like iNaturalist, BugGuide, and Gary Lasley's Nature Photograpy filtering on Northwest locations. Consequently, my identification can only be tentative.
