Lupine Blue(Icaricia lupini)

Hobart Bluff, Soda Mountain Road, Jackson County, Oregon. 6/20/21

Lower Deschutes, Wasco County, Oregon. 5/17/18

Lava Beds NM, Siskiyou County, California. 6/24/19

Note: This species is difficult to distinguish from Acmon Blue. Lupines have a single brood, late May to early August, while Acmon has multiple broods. When both are flying, it is safest to simply record a speciman as Acmon/Lupine. Male Lupines may have a thicker black band on the DFW and a blackish inner border above the orange band on the hind wing. Lupine may have a bright, red-orange band while Acmon may have a pinkish-orange band, though this difference is difficult for me to distinguish. Despite its name, this species feeds on buckwheats rather than lupines.
