Comment. This is a complex of species that had not been fully worked out before publication of the Pyle and LaBarr (2018) fieldguide. Stout (2018) provides a useful map showing the distribution of subspecies throughout the West: A. sara sara in the SW corner of OR and Western California, A. julia flora in the rest of Western OR and WA, A. julia sulfuris in Eastern OR/WA (including the Warner Mountains into California), A. julia stella in Eastern California sounth of the Warners. Art Shapiro refers to the high elevation Orangetip south of the Warners as A. stella but the name is also applied in the Warners butterfly count.
