House Cat

While identification of wild animals is the focus of this web site, a good tracker knows how to distinguish domestic animals. This is particularly important with the house cat since it often ranges widely in rural areas and some individuals are feral.

Tracks

The tracks of a house cat are very similar in structure to bobcat and cougar but on a smaller scale. The track is asymetrical--toe 3 is longer than the other toes and the interdigital pad is slightly askew. The front of the interdigital pad is broad but the two lobes seen in bobcat tracks is less distinct in the house cat.

Gait

The typical gait is a walk with about an 8" stride. Ambles and crawls are also seen.
